In the summer of 2022, FAO Cambodia of the United Nation publicly announced the competition of FAO Cambodia Rooftop Cafeteria Architectural Design that opened to nationwide of architecture students across Cambodia. With the simple brief of the space being flexible to accommodate various events and activities within the area of 200sqm, and most importantly, the incorporation of Cambodian culture and characteristics. Under The Roof, Within The Garden takes inspiration from objectives of FAO Cambodia and immediately relates back to the most essential crop farming in the country, rice cultivation, bringing First Prize reward to the team on the International Youth Day 2022.
With thorough analysis of the rice cultivation process, all steps are summarized into 3 main space that interpret and accommodate required functions for a rooftop cafeteria while provide maximum terrace garden experience to users. From the west side of the plan to corridor along the space, a Garden Gallery, representing the Before Planting stage, is placed to not only to fulfill the required kitchen garden of the brief, but the changing phases of growing plants create scenarios throughout different times of the year. In the center of the linear arrangement is the location of the Kitchen. Lastly on the east side of the plan, the fulfilling meals and the desired meeting outcomes of FAO Cambodia community represents the Reaping Reward of Cambodian farmers.
